Delta and jetBlue promote use of electronics in-flight below 10,000ft with new marketing initiative #below10kfeet

The big news last weekend was that the FAA in the US has finally allowed the use of electronic devices during all phases of flight – music to the ears of the connected traveller. We learnt from The Runway Girl Network that jetBlue and Delta Air Lines were the first off the gate with the new initiative, allowing use of in-flight electronics below 10,000 feet. While both jetBlue and Delta offer wi-fi, it’s the latter that has equipped 100% of its domestic US fleet with wi-fi. And Delta was quick to create an online marketing initiative the new service offering as well.

#below10kfeet – Beat the drum about it

Delta Air Lines has launched a new marketing initiative, with the hashtag #below10kfeet where passengers are encouraged to take photos from their mobile devices at low altitude. And then (ideally) use the airline’s in-flight wi-fi to share it with their friends with the right hashtag. Of course, they can also share it when they get wi-fi connectivity at their destination.

The interesting evolution of marketing in the age of the connected traveller is such that Delta first decided to promote something people did anyway – we have all taken sneaky photos during take offs and landings, isn’t it? Not surprising, since it was just a social media hashtag that was being promoted, jetBlue soon joined the bandwagon and started proliferating it from its own social channels as well. The result? jetBlue is being mentioned just as much as Delta as the saviours of the connected traveller, by allowing them to use electronics. And everyone wins.

Though, right now only Delta is offering a prize of free First Class tickets to those who share there photos.

Power to the connected traveller!
