At Heathrow Airport, smart gates track passenger location to avoid flight delays

Installed in Terminals 1 and 3 at the major airport, the system involves gates that are placed at different points between the entrance and the final boarding gate. As customers progress through the different stages of boarding their flight – from check-in and baggage checks, to passing through security and entering the departure lounge – gates similar to those found in train stations require passengers to scan their boarding pass.

Airport operator, Fraport, says: “When dog owners go on holidays or business trips, they often have difficulties finding someone to take care of their loyal companion. “So, don’t bark up the wrong tree trying to find a solution as Frankfurt Airport is dedicated to the canine comforts of your four-legged family members.”

Another way of leveraging airport cameras is to empower them to see better and then share faster. Avigilon, one maker of such a system, is working with Dallas Love Field to implement this idea. “High-definition cameras have the ability to cover a wider area and can zoom in to see a face, read a license plate or determine a tail number on a plane,” said Bryan Schmode, executive vice president of global sales.

“New innovations in high-definition security enable operators to easily send footage to smartphones or tablets. Dallas Love Field’s police officers or airport officials will get the video of a suspicious person on a hand-held device immediately rather than having to race back to a central monitor to see what happened.”

“I think first of all, they’re going to be really impressed with the major electronic media that we have,” he said. “The iconic clock tower is something reminiscent of the clock towers you would see in Europe and it’s the type of thing you’ll remember long after you get in that airplane. The portals as you walk through interact with you; if you’re boarding a Singapore flight or a flight to Beijing, you’ll have a video up there that will represent where you’re going; you might as you move your hands play the strings of a Chinese traditional instrument. It’s just something that’ll give the passenger a unique experience.”
