A Brief History of the Airline Selfie — and all about KLM’s latest CitySelfie Contest

You’d think selfies were invented just for the airline industry.

The rise of the selfie has been inexorable. It has not only made it as a dictionary entry but was also declared the word of the year by the Oxford Dictionary. More interesting still, has been the rise in its popularity amongst travellers. Consider the recent viral video of the traveller who shot selfies over a 3-year period on his GoPro camera.

Airline passengers too have become famous in recent times for selfie adventures. In January, a man shot a selfie of himself floating in the ocean after the small plane he was travelling in crashed.

In March, a US Airways plane hit the tarmac after a failed take-off due to a mechanical error — and, of course, a passenger decided to document the crash (nobody was hurt) with a selfie that went viral. She went on to be interviewed by the Wall Street Journal. Her original tweet with the selfie has clocked over 4000 retweets.

While these are dramatic events, a recent story claimed that flight crews can’t stop taking mile-high selfies.

But the airline selfie is nothing new. Back in December, Turkish Airlines had launched a very popular Kobe vs Messi Selfie Shootout advertisement — along with a mobile app developed just to complement the initiative. The YouTube video has received over 137m views!

KLM CitySelfie

And now, KLM, always eager to stay with the latest trends, has jumped on to the bandwagon as well.

KLM is offering a pair of tickets around the world for the person who can take the best “CitySelfie”, a new variation where a person takes a 360-degree video of themselves amongst their city’s prettiest scenery. But more than that, KLM is promising the person who can take the best CitySelfie a free trip around the world. More in the video below:

Entrants need to tag their CitySelfies with the hashtag #CitySelfies. The winner of two Round The World tickets, with up to five stops of their choosing around the world, will be selected by a distinguished group of professional photographers and travellers. For more information, and to enter, visit the CitySelfie micro-site.
